Canes Head to First Round of State Playoffs

The Monticello Lady Hurricanes were to play in the first round of the Georgia High School Association’s softball state playoffs Wednesday in a double elimination style format with three games slated to play, if necessary, against Dade County.

If the Lady Canes were to win both games Wednesday then onto the second round next week they would go. If action was split between Dade, then the squads will face off today, Oct 12 in Dade at 4 p.m. Whomever advances this week will face the victor of the Washington/Lamar match-up next Wednesday.

The Lady Canes enter the state playoffs seeded #3 in the 8-AA region by virtue of falling to Social Circle 5-4 in the ninth inning last week during the region playoffs.

The Lady Canes trailed 4-1 in the top of the seventh inning when Lacey Rutledge hit a triple in the seventh with bases loaded to tie the game at 4. However, Rutledge was tagged out at third base while attempting to make it home and give the squad a one run lead. The Redskins were held to no runs in the bottom of the seventh sending the game into extra innings.

Still tied in the eighth inning, the Lady Canes had a run come in but the umpire called the runner out due to them missing home plate. The Redskins went on to score in the ninth inning for the win.
