Lady Hurricanes Advance in Playoffs
The varsity softball Lady Hurricanes of Jasper County High School defeated Lamar County on Wednesday, Oct. 18, to advance in the state playoffs. They will travel to Columbus next week.
The varsity softball Lady Hurricanes of Jasper County High School defeated Dade County of Region 7AA last Wednesday, Oct. 11, in doubleheader action during the first round of GHSA softball state playoffs.
The varsity squad played on the road in Trenton late Wednesday in a best of three contest with games at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Luckily, the Lady Canes defeated Dade 3-0 and 4-0 on Wednesday which prevented a third game and an overnight stay or long travel back to Northeast Georgia last Thursday.
In the first game, Lauren Mosley and O’Neil Sealy had first inning runs batted in (RBIs) and Mia Jenkins hit a homerun in the third inning.
In the second game, Jessi Caron and Mackenzie Abbott had RBI singles. Caron and Mosley each had three hits for the day and Abbott went 4-for-5.
“Two solid wins against a good team. Scoring two runs in the first inning of game 1one set the tone for the day,” noted Head Coach Chris Jenkins.
“They had a large crowd that is known for being loud, and we were able to take them out of the game early. Our pitching and defense were outstanding in both games, zero errors and only allowing two runners past second base will allow you to win a lot of games.
“Dade had a good scoring opportunity in the third inning of game one, but Madison Abbott picked a runner off third, and Mackenzie Abbott made a sliding catch in centerfield to save a run and end the inning. Offensively, we had 10 players that had an at-bat, and all 10 had at least one hit.”
The squad was to face Lamar County this week on October 18. Lamar is ranked #1 in Region 5AA and soundly defeated Washington County last week in a doubleheader 19-0 and 25-1.
A defeat of Lamar this week would send the Lady Canes on the road to Columbus for the GHSA state semifinals to face the winner of Bleckley County/Berrien County.
