Lady Cane Reaches A Milestone
The Jasper County High School Lady Hurricanes defeated the Greene County Tigers 47-31 for the second time this season Tuesday while on the road. Junior Madison Abbott had a big game beyond the victory by reaching the 1,000th point scoring milestone in her high school career.
En route to victory, Madison was the high point scorer with 32 which contributed to latest accolade. She added six steals, one block, and three rebounds to her statistics. Alyssa Wilson scored six points and had eight rebounds; Mackenzie Abbott had five points and four rebounds; and Alicia Tripp had four points and 10 rebounds.
The varsity squad is currently 2-3 following Tuesday’s win and a 45-42 loss to Jones County on Saturday.
The Lady Canes played in the Tom’s Thanksgiving tournament just prior to Thanksgiving last week and finished with narrow losses to Rutland and Warner Robins.
The varsity boys squad also defeated Greene County again, 65-59. The squad, currently 2-1, had their first loss of the season against the Jones County Greyhounds, 82-64.
In spite of the loss, Coach Chris Pennamon said there were some bright spots to appreciate. He noted that Kedrion Jackson “came off the bench and gave the team a significant boost of energy and defensive intensity” when the squad started to drop momentum in the second half. That boost led to Jackson scoring 14 points while Ashton Bonner had 28 and De’Ivion Lawerence reaching double digits with 10.
“In the second half Jones’ defensive intensity was just to much for us to handle. We are actually a young team despite the way it looks. We have only two varsity starters returning this year in Bonner and Malik Crawford. The addition of De’Ivion Lawrence, a transfer from Morgan County, brings more varsity experience,” said Coach Pennamon.
“However after that we have several boys that have little to no varsity playing experience, so many of them are still learning. The further we get into the season the boys will learn more, get more confident along with get a better understanding of what the coaching staff is looking for and expecting. The season is still young and we haven’t started region play yet, so we are where we ought to be when it comes to progression.”
The coach continued, “As some of the key pieces get better and they start to grasp what it is that we are trying to do then we can only get better from there. It is coming…we see it in practice each day. We are just trying to get it to transfer over to the games and we know as a coaching staff it will in the upcoming games!”
The junior varsity and varsity boys squads will travel to Spartanburg Christian Academy in S.C. Friday, Dec. 1 for competition beginning at 6 p.m. On Satiurday, Dec. 2, all junior varsity and varsity teams will travel to Jackson for competition beginning at 3 p.m.
