Man Is Shot by Deputy

A Jasper County deputy shot and killed a resident on Grandview Drive in west Jasper County Monday around lunchtime.

Preliminary information indicates that at 11:21 a.m., a 911 call was made from a female complainant who stated that while walking on Grandview Road in Jasper County, she was approached by a male subject who pointed a firearm at her. The man apparently pulled the trigger with the gun pointed at her and with it pointed all around, according to reports. The gun did not go off at that time. It merely “clicked” said Sheriff Donnie Pope.

The female reported that the man appeared to be intoxicated.

Jasper County deputies responded immediately, arriving in the area at 11:28 a.m. While investigating the complaint they heard multiple gunshots coming from a residence in the 600 block of Grandview Road. That residence belonged to Jeffrey Scott Cantrell, 46.

At the house, deputies made contact with the subject who was identified as Mr. Cantrell. Mr. Cantrell made statements to the officers that they would have to kill him. During the incident, gunfire was exchanged between Mr. Cantrell and the deputies. Mr. Cantrell died at the scene. No officers were injured.

Further investigation found that prior to the incident, Mr. Cantrell had contacted a family member and talked about committing suicide.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the officer involved shooting.

An autopsy was to be performed at the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur. When the investigation is completed, the case will be turned over to the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.

The officer involved is on administrative leave, which is protocol for the situation.

Joe Wooten with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Milledgeville office, said they will conduct a thorough investigation, but said it is early in the investigation so not much more is known. The officer-involved shooting was covered by several Atlanta area news agencies.

Previous to Monday’s event, deputies had responded to several reports of theft, as well as another report of counterfeit bills.

Persons arrested in the last week, and their charges, include:
