Four Mat Cougars Medal

Piedmont Academy’s varsity wrestlers ventured to the state meet in Americus this past weekend to compete at the GISA finals.

Junior Logan Conner finished as the state runner-up at 195 pounds to cap a standout season to go along with his previously won region championship. Conner lost in overtime in the finals.

Trent Coots (132) was fourth in his weight class while Noah Faubil (120) and Tanner Coppock (182) were both fifth in their respective divisions.

“We had a couple of heartbreaking matches,” said Piedmont coach Kaden Miller. “Noah had a tough one-point loss in the semifinals. It was his first loss of the season. Logan’s loss in the finals was also tough. Those matches could have both gone our way and it was disappointing for our wrestlers not to get those wins.”

Faubli’s loss in the semifinals was the first time an opponent had even taken him to a full match.

Miller said it was still a great season for all of the team, including Garrett Kirksey, who competed at heavyweight in Americus.

“Our wrestlers competed and worked hard all season,” the coach said.

“This is a very tough sport and it is a hard season to get through. I am proud of each one of them. They battled during the regular season and then at region and at state.”
