Cougar Soccer Girls Win 13-1

Piedmont Academy’s varsity girls soccer team began the 2018 season with a dominating 13-1 win against Windsor Academy last week on the road in Macon.

“It was a great way to start the season,” said coach Michael Wilson. “We know we are going to face teams with a lot more experience and skill and in between now and then we have to work on some areas, but overall it was a great win.”

Windsor is a first-year program so it was important for Piedmont to take the field and set the tone.

“It’s important you go in and play to your level and we did that,” Wilson said. “We have five seniors and in games like this they set the tone. I thought all of the team played great and they definitely set the tone.”

Piedmont’s coach said Alexis Dodson did a great job and was able to put herself in great position to finish often in the first half noting she was really focused on having a great game and she did.

“To start the scoring off so early was important and Caitlyn Young did what she can do better than any player we will see this year and that’s score off set pieces from outside 25 yards,” Wilson said.

“She took a direct kick and I guess their keeper didn’t think she could get the ball to the net and came out before the kick and she just lofted the ball over her into the goal.”

Sydney Davis and Emily Mills worked great strong up front and combined for several goals and scoring opportunities. Taylor Patterson worked great from the wing getting the ball into the middle and creating scoring chances, Wilson said.

“Mallory Boyd had a great game,” Wilson said. “She has definitely improved her skill from last year and she will do nothing but help us the rest of the year in multiple positions.”

The opener also allowed the team’s younger players a chance to gain varsity game experience.

“I thought our younger players got a good opportunity to gain some experience in a game we had in hand and when region teams roll around next week I think they will give us key depth in games we will need it if we want to sustain our energy the entire game,” Wilson said.

The Lady Cougars fell to Monsignor Donovan 2-0 Monday on the road in Athens while the Piedmont varsity boys were defeated 4-0.

Tuesday’s scheduled matches against Augusta Prep on the road were postponed due to weather conditions.

The varsity soccer teams will travel to GMC Friday, March 9 for matches beginning at 5:45 p.m.
