Varsity ‘Canes Split Action at Banks County

The Monticello Hurricane varsity baseball squad split action last Friday in a doubleheader at Banks County.

In the first game of the doubleheader on the road the Canes fell 6-3. The Canes scored first with a run in the first inning and Banks retaliated with heated bats early as they came up with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Canes managed two more runs over the next two innings but couldn’t catch up to their opponent who managed another run in the fourth.

Matt Cain was on the mound for six innings earning five strikeouts. Baylor Edge and Braden Lynch each had one hit; Cole Hays, Dylan Jackson, and Lynch each earned walks; and Tyler Wages had one RBI.

The second of two games went better for the Canes with a 7-6 win. With bats hot from the start, the Canes scored four runs in the first inning and one in the second. Over the course of their first four innings, Banks managed to match those five runs. A solid seventh inning helped the Canes seal the victory.

“We played pretty good ball for 13 of the 14 innings against Banks,” said Coach Chris Jenkins. “If you take out the first inning of game one, we have a good shot at sweeping a team that should make the playoffs this year. We still have a long way to go defensively and mentally, but we were scrappy in game two which can win a lot of games at this level.”

“Tyler Wages had a big day at the plate, including a double squeeze that put us up 7-5 in the final inning of the second game.”
