911 Celebrates 20 Years

Many people won’t remember the day, but exactly 20 years ago on March 9, Jasper County took its first 911 call under the directive of Ed Westbrook.

Jasper County’s 911 came into fruition after much planning and preparation, and as Mr. Westbrook explained at that time, the 911 system came in under budget and ahead of schedule.

He also explained that 911 should be used whenever there is an emergency. “If you need someone to respond, call 911,” he said, speaking to the Monticello Kiwanis Club. “If you want information, do not call 911,” he added.

Betty Jump is the current 911 director, and the system continues to serve Jasper well.
