‘Mac’ McElheney
Marion Earl “Mac” McElheney Jr., 92, of Stone Mountain, passed away Saturday, March 24, 2018 at Northlake Gardens in Tucker.
Mr. McElheney was born in Hillsboro, on May 23, 1925, the son of the late Marion Early McElheney Sr. and Bessie Florence Tyler McElheney. He attended Emory at Oxford and graduated from Southern Polytechnic State University. He retired from Lockheed Martin Corporation after 36 years as an Industrial Engineer. “Mac” had many hobbies and enjoyed helping anyone who needed help.
In World War II, he served in the U. S. Army, 278 Combat Engineers, in the European Theater. He was very active in the reunion of the “278” until so few remained that they disbanded in 2006.
He met and married Ellie Norman, a teacher in DeKalb County and they lived in Atlanta until 1979 when they moved to Stone Mountain. He was a member of the Briarlake Baptist Church and was an active member of the Businessman’s Bible Class. He was also a member of Masters Masonic Lodge # 295.
When he and his wife retired, they traveled extensively in the United States, Europe and the Middle East. They traveled to the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia Argentina and also to Hammerfest Norway, the world’s northernmost town.
He is survived by his daughter: Norma M. Robertson; his son: Dr. N. Earl McElheney and five grandchildren: Stephen and Matthew Robertson and Taylor, Megan and Connor McElheney.
He was preceded in death by his wife: Ellie Norman McElheney and three sisters: Dorothy Cragg, Doris Garman and Marjorie Woodard.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 31, 2018 at 2 p.m. at the Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery, Hartwell.
