Westminster Earns Soccer Sweep

Piedmont Academy’s varsity soccer teams were swept by Westminster last week.

The Lady Cougars fell 2-0 while the varsity boys were defeated 12-0.

In the girls contest, coach Michael Wilson said his team played a “great game defensively.”

“Westminster is a traditionally elite GISA program,” the coach said. “While they may be young, they are still well coached, very skilled and dangerous.

We held our shape on the back line very well and part of our defensive success was Caitlyn Young, Mattie Johnston, and Alexis Dodson being very selfless and playing a lot of defense for the team’s good. Those are three of our best players and for the younger girls to witness that willingness to sacrifice for the greater good hopefully was recognized.”

Other players also contributed to the strong effort.

“Sydney Davis expanded her role from a pure forward to add some midfield as well and played the best I’ve seen her play since I’ve coached the girls,” Wilson said. “She fought and challenged girls all game and she’s played the last several games on a banged up knee and hasn’t complained about it. She’s just fought through it and really helped our team get better even though we don’t have as many wins as we’d like.”

Varsity Boys

“There’s not much you can say except it was fun to watch Westminster’s first unit play,” Wilson said. “They played the first 10 minutes of each half, scored nine goals and are by far the most talented team we will see this year and that any team in the area will see. They would be the best team in nearly any GHSA classification.”

Despite the quality opponent, Piedmont’s coach said he was proud of the way his team battled.

“The boys have fun playing and give it 100 percent the whole game but more importantly they play the right way,” he said. “They don’t take cheap shots, try to hurt folks and represent what Piedmont is about. This place is about the whole student and their development and these young men have great character. I’m proud to coach them.”
