Lady Cougars Earn Big Soccer Victory

It was a dominant performance for the Piedmont Academy varsity girls soccer team against Windsor last week as the Lady Cougars recorded a 9-0 victory.

Piedmont built a 4-0 halftime lead after goals by Taylor Patterson, Caitlyn Young, Sydney Davis and Mattie Johnston. Alexis Dodson and Emily Mills had assists.

“I thought we played well after a sluggish start,” coach Michael Wilson said. “Taylor Patterson scored in the opening two minutes of the game then we seemed to lose some aggressiveness and settle for shots instead of working as a unit. However, the last 50 minutes of the game, I felt we played our best all-around game of the year. Caitlyn scored with 10 minutes left in the first half and from that point on we passed the ball and moved without the ball better than I’ve seen them do it the last couple of years.”

In the second half goals by two goals each from Mills and Davis helped seal the win. Young had two assists and Dodson had one in the second half.

“I doubt Windsor had the soccer ball in our end more than three times the last 50 minutes and those were just counter attacks,” Wilson said. “They never possessed the ball. We did a great job of keeping the pressure on them it was great to see everyone play well and play a lot of minutes.”

In the final minute of the match, Anne Marie Hildebrant scored her first varsity goal.

“She played goal keeper from the sixth grade until last season,” Wilson said. “This year she expressed interest in playing the field and I was glad to hear that. She’s a very good athlete who has great feet and knows the game. She has really helped us in the midfield and on defense all year. To see her be rewarded with some individual success was well worth it. It was great coaching her the last two years and she will be missed.”
