Diamond Cougars Aim For GISA Region Title
Piedmont Academy’s varsity baseball team will look to secure a region title and number one seeding for the state playoffs against Brentwood next week.
The Cougars had a chance to wrap up the region title last Saturday but fell to the Eagles 3-2. That outcome leaves the teams tied for first.
A one-game playoff will now be used to determine the region champion. Coach Wes Tanner said the game will be Monday at 5 p.m. at Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville.
While disappointed in Saturday’s loss, Tanner said his team played well.
“It was just a good baseball game between two good teams,” the coach said.
Prior to Saturday’s game with Brentwood the Cougars defeated region foe Briarwood 14-0 on the road last Thursday. Chase Porter (2-for-3, three runs, four RBI), Sam Wright (2-for-4, two runs, two RBI), Rob Allgood (2-for-2, two runs, three RBI) and Cameron Mobley (2-for-3, two runs) helped pace the offensive attack.
Piedmont jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning and then scored five more runs in both the second and third.
Mobley, Porter and Matthew Griffin shared the pitching duties. Mobley worked the first two innings and recorded four strikeouts before Porter pitched the next two frames with three strikeouts. Griffin closed out the contest and struck out two batters.
Briarwood managed only two hits against the Cougar pitchers.
Dawson Coe was also 1-for-1 at the plate while Caleb Faircloth scored two runs. Tate Marks was 1-for-3.
Piedmont will travel to Tiftarea Academy Friday in Chula for a non-region game. Tanner said he will use the contest as a chance to get players more at-bats. He plans to use multiple pitchers once again. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
