Canes’ Summer Basketball In Action
The Monticello Hurricane varsity basketball squad has been in high gear over the past week traveling the area playing several opponents.
Head Coach Chris Pennamon, heading into his second year, said he steadying the team for the upcoming season.
“As a team, we have a lot to replace with the loss of Ashton Bonner, De’Ivion Lawrence, Cordarius Brannon, Christopher Pennamon, Devin Robinson, Braden Lynch, and DeEric Driskell to graduation and then losing Malik Crawford (who transferred) to top it off,” noted the Canes’ varsity head coach.
‘We have a lot of teaching and growing to do over the summer and fall before we can be competitive in our region, but we’re confident if everyone buys in we can win some games and if God’s willing, we’ll be in the top half of the region again.”
Coach Pennamon said he is looking for big things out of seniors Jaymerious Fleetwood, Dylan Jackson, Corde Ross, rising juniors Jordin Thomas and Jodari Stone and upcoming sophomore Keon Maddox, who showed great promise this past weekend at Clayton State University at the team camp competition.
The Hurricanes went 2-3 during the Clayton State competition, losing one at the buzzer to Westlake High School on Saturday and also falling to Redan High School and Morrow High School.
Despite those losses, the squad beat AAAAAAA school Central Gwinnett High School and AAAAA Creekside High School.
The varsity squad traveled to Henry County last Thursday and to Bleckley County last Friday before hosting Jones County Monday for a junior varsity and varsity scrimmage.
