Emory Jacobs
Funeral services for Emory Jacobs, 76, will be held Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Shady Dale with burial in the Shady Dale Community Cemetery. Rev. Cynthia McDonald will officiate with Rev. Annette Gude Howard as the eulogist.
Mr. Jacobs, a beloved father and faithful servant of God, passed away before sunrise on Thursday, June 28 after an extended illness. He was born and raised in Monticello.
Brother Jacobs was born January 16, 1942, to the late Percy Lee Jacobs and Irene Ward Jacobs. He was educated in the Jasper County School System. He was very skilled in math and loved tinkering to put things together. Exerting his entrepreneurial skills, he eventually started his own business company, Jacobs Builders, and operated it for 30 years. A skilled brick mason. he constructed and renovated a plethora of homes and churches. Building brought him such great joy that it didn’t seem like work, and he was evemtually joined in the business by his son, Quentin.
As a lifelong member of Mount Zion A.M.E. Church, he served diligently on many boards within the church including the Deacon Board, Trustee Board, Steward Board and Building Fund Board. He kept the church maintained and installed bathrooms that are still in use today.
A very talented singer, Brother Jacobs was often asked to perform at gospel programs, funerals and other church ceremonies. His favorite songs included “Hold to God’s Unchanging Hand” and “He’s Sweet I Know.”
He enjoyed fishing, growing vegetables and eating chocolate ice cream. He gave generously of his time and resources to others as he helped many people. He was a Mason with the Mansfield Lodge #295.
He married Julia Mae Bullard and to this union five children were born.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters: Ola Mae Digby, Betty Jean White, and Mary Jean Jacobs; and two brothers, Tommie Lee Jacobs and Samuel Ross.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: oldest and only son, Quentin Dae Jacobs (Clarice) of Monticello; four daughters, Nesa Deneen Andrews of Covington, Karen Renee Hicks (Ronnie) of Ellenwood, Susan Jacobs of Covington, and Bionca DeAnn Sims (Lanier) of Covington; grandchildren, Damien Gotel (Shari), Jawann Andrews (Shana), Sade and Jasmine Andrews, Corvette and Corey Harrison, Robyn and Jacob Asbell, Eljay and unborn Baby Sims, LaThaydra Sands (Amantae); great-grandchildren, Leneka, Natalia, Diontae, and Benaiah Gotel, Kameron Waller, McKenzie, Kennedy and Chevy Sands; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is also survived by four sisters-in-law, Georgia Ross, Ruth Jones, Catherine Bullard, and Flossie Hamm; and close friends Lonnie Jones, Curtis Driskell, and Jean and Joe Mack.
Smith & Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
