Lady Canes Win 13-2

The Lady Hurricanes varsity softball squad is off to a good start for the 2018-2019 season raking in a 13-2 victory over the Morgan County Lady Bulldogs Tuesday.

The squad distributed runs evenly throughout the five innings with three runs each in the first two, a single in the third, four in the fourth, and two in the fifth.

Veteran head coach Chris Jenkins returns to lead the varsity squad again following the team’s journey to the GHSA AA state playoffs last season where the Lady Canes came up just shy of a state title.

“We lost four starters off of last year’s team, so if we can find a way to replace their production and leadership this could be another good season,” he noted.

“We will be young or inexperienced in several positions, but with the attitude and work ethic I’ve seen out of the girls so far, it won’t be long before they’re comfortable.’

If Tuesday’s competition is any indication of what to expect from his young squad, Coach Jenkins should be able to quell many of his questions.

The squad includes seniors Mackenzie Abbott, Madison Abbott, Mia Jenkins, Lacey Rutledge, Mackenzie Tripp, Kaitlyn Wilbanks; juniors Taylor Bloodworth, Makayla Wages; sophomores Bailey Jenkins, Marley Sands, Hailie Tripp; freshmen Avery Barton, Azure Guli, Hailey Hooberry, Jocelyn Morris, Jenna Parrish, Kate Robinson, and Jasmine Stone.

Tuesday began a three day stretch with the ladies scheduled to travel to Locust Grove Wednesday and host Mary Persons today, August 9, if weather permits. The weekend will bring a trip to the Chik-fil-a Classic in Augusta on Saturday, August 11.
