Lady Cougars Post Impressive Win at Home
The Piedmont Academy fast-pitch softball team began its news season in recent days falling to Eastside High School before rebounding for a big win against Windsor on Monday.
In Monday’s 10-0 home victory the Lady Cougars scored a run in the bottom of the first inning before adding five more in the second and four more in the bottom of the fourth.
It was a big offensive day for Piedmont as Madison Johnson had three hits and Haley Ann Frank compiled two. Johnson also drove in four runs while Neely Bradford had three RBI and Frank connected for two RBI. Cassidy Cook also drew a walk.
Mattie Morton earned the win pitching five innings with four strikeouts for coach Colt Spivey.
Tuesday’s scheduled game in Perry between Piedmont and Westfield, the two defending GISA state champions, was postponed due to lightning.
The Middle School teams between the schools were able to compete with Westfield winning 8-0.
In the season opener against Eastside, a GHSA team, on Aug. 9, the Lady Cougars were hurt by four defensive miscues. The visiting Lady Eagles scored two runs in the top of the first and added three more in the third inning. Eastside’s final run came in the top of the fifth.
Bradford pitched the first five innings for the Lady Cougars with Morton working the final two. Bradford recorded five strikeouts.
The Lady Cougars will travel to John Milledge Academy today, Augsut 16 for a 4 p.m. contest before traveling to Augusta State Saturday for a pair of games against Lakeside-Evans at 11 a.m. and Harlem at 1 p.m.
Also contributing for Piedmont this season will be Hailey Hooper, Mattie Johnston, Deacon Robinson, Lucy Tuggle, Melanie Karoffa, Jayden Young, Fleming Sealy, Maddie Waddleton and MaLynne Webb.
