Cougars Post Impressive 39-0 Win over Monsignor Donovan in Opener
Piedmont Academy’s varsity football team gave its new head coach a convincing victory in his debut with the team last week as the Cougars blanked visiting Monsignor Donovan 39-0.
After months of offseason work, the win in the season opener was a welcome experience, coach Mike Parris said.
“We were all very excited about it,” Parris said. “The kids went out and played hard and did some good things. It is certainly good to see all of your preseason work pay off.”
The Cougars used a strong rushing attack combined with a stingy defense to earn the win. Piedmont rushed for 302 total yards with Logan Conner leading the way with 117 yards on the ground with four touchdowns.
With new coordinator Clint Ashmore directing the offense, the Cougars had six rushing touchdowns for the night. Owen Brady added 64 yards on the ground with Trent Coots totaling 61.
Tate Marks was 3-for-6 passing for 74 yards and added two touchdowns.
“It was good to have such a strong offensive output,” Parris said. “It was a nice way to start the season. We still have some things we can get better on.”
The offensive line drew praise as well with Parris noting he expects that unit to improve from week to week.
“Your offensive line typically improves a good bit from game one to game two,” the coach said.
On the defensive side of the football, which Parris coordinates, Piedmont was able to keep Monsignor Donovan’s ground game in check.
“Whenever you held an opponent scoreless that is something to be proud of and hang your hat on,” Parris said. “We accomplished some good things on defense as well.”
Conner and J.T. Webb helped lead the team in tackles.
The Cougars were back to work earlier this week preparing for Thomas Jefferson Academy in week two of the regular season. The Jaguars also enter the game 1-0 after defeating John Hancock Academy in their opener.
TJA will use a power running attack to try and control the clock as well the Piedmont defense. Parris noted the Jaguars use a two tight end set employing the wishbone.
“They are a smash mouth football team that is going to line up and run right at you,” Parris said. “This will really be a game where you have to have a good week of preparation. Our defensive players will have to take care of their responsibilities each play.”
Friday’s contest will be on the road in Louisville with an 8 p.m. kickoff.
“This is our first time on the road this season,” Parris said. “That always adds an extra element to things. It really all goes back to having a good week of practice and then being ready to give a maximum effort once the game begins.”
Piedmont hopes to continue building momentum in week two.
“When you look at it and wonder if we are where we need to be the answer is no,” Parris said. “However, if you ask whether we are getting there then the answer is yes.”
