Strong Play Helps Lady Cougars Earn More Victories
The Piedmont Academy softball team continued its impressive play last week recording another pair of wins.
Coach Colt Spivey’s Lady Cougars defeated Georgia FCA Aug. 21 using a quick start to take a 7-1 win. Piedmont scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed in the contest as the offense compiled 13 hits.
Maddie Morton pitched all seven innings and recorded 12 strikeouts while allowing just two hits.
Offensively, the Lady Cougars were led by a three-hit performance by Neely Bradford and two hits from Madison Johnson. Hailey Hooper drew two walks and Fleming Sealy drove in two runs.
Piedmont then defeated Windsor Academy 7-3 on Aug. 23 as Bradford went the distance with six strikeouts. The Lady Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and one more in the top of the third.
The game was tied at 3-3, however, going into the seventh inning when Piedmont pushed four runs across. The Lady Cougars had double the number of hits compared to the Lady Knights but the outcome was not decided until the final inning.
Lucy Tuggle and Bradford led the Piedmont offense while Johnson drove in three runs. Mattie Johnston also had an RBI.
The Lady Cougars will host Fullington Academy today, August 30 at 5 p.m.
The Middle School Lady Cougars defeated Jasper County 14-3 last week in a matchup of local squads.
