Lady Canes Begin 8-AA Competition with Win

The Lady Hurricanes competed in their first 8AA region games of the season over the past six days—defeating both Union County and Oglethorpe for their first region victories.

Tuesday the squad traveled to Lexington to face the Oglethorpe Lady Patriots and came away with an 8-2 win. Bailey Jenkins pitched the game.

On Monday, the varsity Lady Canes hosted the Union Grove Lady Wolverines who went away with a 8-3 win. The Lady Canes rattled off hits early scoring runs in the first, third, and fifth innings but their opponent responded with multiple runs scored in the final two innings.

Against the Union County Lady Panthers last Thursday, Jenkins was again the winning pitcher in a 6-0 shut out region win.

The varsity squad also earned a 4-3 win over the Ola Lady Mustangs last Wednesday with Avery Barton on the mound.

Coach Chris Jenkins had words of praise and encouragement for his young team.

“Against Ola and Union Grove, two good AAAAA teams, we played good ball for 13 of the 14 innings. We scored two in the bottom of the seventh versus Ola to win it and had a 3-1 lead against Union Grove in the sixth inning, then allowed the wheels to fall off,” he recalled.

“We had two good region wins against Union County and Oglethorpe with Bailey Jenkins dominant in both games. We’re still not hitting the ball like we’re capable of. If we start taking a better approach at the plate, we can be a tough team to beat with as solid as our pitching and defense have been.”

Currently 2-0 in the region and 9-3 overall, the Lady Canes are in control of their destiny. In the region, Social Circle is also 2-0 and 5-4 overall while Banks is 2-1 and 5-1 overall. Elbert, Union, and Rabun are each 1-1 in region play while Oglethorpe and Putnam have garnered no region wins yet.

The Lady Canes will continue region play by hosting Elbert today, August 30 at 5:30 p.m. The squad has a seven day break from action before taking on a stellar Banks squad next Thursday, Sept. 6 also at 5:30 p.m.
