Canes Defeat Bowdon, 13-12
It was a successful night for the Monticello Hurricanes as they defeated the Bowden County Red Devils, 13-12 at Rose Bowl Field in Monticello. The Canes’ record improves to 1-1 after the win.
The first quarter started out with the Canes and the Red Devils exchanging long possessions. The Canes defense came up big for the first time of the night by causing a turnover on downs as the Canes forced the Red Devils to fail on a fourth down conversion.
With this new found momentum, the Canes’ offense rushed for a monstrous 77 yard touchdown run, courtesy to #14 Jay Fleetwood. This monstrous touchdown run led to the Canes heading into the second quarter leading 7-0.
The second quarter was dominated by the Canes defense, as the defense was unwilling to allow for the Red Devils to gain any yards. The Canes defense caused another turn over on downs which provided the Canes offense back with possession of the football. This defensive stand was followed up by the Canes defense forcing the Red Devils offense to punt the ball three consecutive times. To wrap up a defensively dominant quarter, #62 Tyler Wages makes an ever impactful sack that leads to the first half coming to a close, with the Canes going into halftime with a lead of 7-0.
The third quarter was led by both the Canes offense and defense. The Canes came within inches multiple times of scoring another touchdown. However, the Red Devils defense was granted continual moments of extreme luck as the Canes would have to wait a bit longer to score another touchdown.
The Canes defense was successful as well. Again, the Red Devils luck played a factor into the outcome as the Red Devils scored a touchdown to make the score 7-6. The Canes would have to rally up on both sides of the ball in order to keep the narrow one point margin lead as the Canes headed into the fourth quarter.
Now, it was the offense’s turn to turn the tide of the game. The Canes offense came extremely close multiple times to breaking the goal line barrier and putting an extra 7 points on the board. They were finally able to break the goal line and score another touchdown thanks to a big touchdown run by Dylan Jackson.
This big run was followed by an impressive third down stop by #56 Chantz Watts. However, after a touchdown by the Red Devils late in the fourth quarter, the Canes rallied up to stop the two point conversion. The Canes two point conversion stop lead to the Canes triumphing over the Red Devils by a margin of 13-12.
The Canes play North Cobb Christian in their next game—tomorrow, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Rose Bowl Field. This is the Canes last game before region play starts September 14. The Canes also plan on playing in their new stadium next year, so fans should come out to Rose Bowl Field, and watch the action, as this is the last year the field will be used for varsity football.
