Cougars Overmatched Against Terrell at Home
Piedmont Academy football coach Mike Parris proved to be quite a forecaster last week even though the Cougar mentor likely wishes he had been wrong.
Parris predicted that the visiting Terrell Academy Eagles would be a very tough opponent and likely the best his team has faced in 2018. The coach was correct on all accounts.
Terrell took a 41-0 victory at Cougar Field last week handed Piedmont (2-1-1 overall) its first loss of the season.
“We don’t like using excuses but the fact is Terrell was two-platooning players and we have five who play on both sides of the football,” Parris said. “Plus the temperature just won’t break and that plays a factor.”
The Piedmont coach did stress, however, that his team has to do a better job when playing top caliber opponents.
“We are a young team and are still learning but when we face an opponent like Terrell we have to respond a little better. You can’t use the excuse of your opponent being a good team. We definitely ran into a buzz saw but we need to step our game up.”
The Cougars went back to work this week in preparation for another quality foe.
“It’s a growing process,” Parris said. “If we stay with it and keep working hard in practice and in the weight room we will get to where we want to be. Last Friday night though we were outmatched, outplayed and outcoached.”
The Cougars are back in action this Friday when they travel to Southwest Georgia in Damascus for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. It will be another tough test for Piedmont as the Warriors enter the game 4-1.
Southwest Georgia has defeated Abbeville Christian of Alabama (40-12), Crisp Academy (36-6) Munroe (Florida) 47-14 and Flint River Academy (44-7). The team’s only setback was against Southland Academy 29-6.
“They are not quite as physical as Terrell but they have some players who are really good,” Parris said. “They have a receiver who is probably the best player in the GISA. We will have to try and control him.”
Piedmont faces a long bus ride this week so the Cougars will have to overcome that scenario.
“We are just going to keep working,” Parris said. “After the game with Southwest Georgia we will have a week off. That will come at a good time for us.”
NOTE: Piedmont Academy’s elementary school football team will play against Robert Toombs in Lyons on Saturday with kickoff at 11 a.m.
