Lady Canes Host Region, Play Today

Hosting the 8-AA region championship tournament, the Lady Hurricanes will face off against Banks County today, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m.

Going into the tournament as the sole undefeated team in the region gave the squad the right to host the final two rounds of the tournament where the region champion will be crowned tomorrow. Monticello, Social Circle, Union, and Banks are the remaining teams that will battle for the seed designations heading into the state tournament which begins next Wednesday, Oct. 10.

Round three was held Tuesday, with the Lady Canes playing twice. In their first game of the day, the Lady Canes soundly defeated Union County but fell to Social Circle in the final game of the day. Falling to Social Circle, who was seeded second to the Lady Canes headed into the tournament, will have the Lady Canes needing a win against Banks today to contend for the region title which means they would face Social Circle again today at 3 p.m.

The win-loss scenario from Tuesday creates a number of outcomes for the Lady Canes that depend on the outcome of their first game today. A win against Banks assures them a spot in the title game and also an opportunity to host the first round of state as both first and second seeded teams will host in the first round of state. A loss against Banks means being seeded third going into the state tournament and going on the road for the first round against the second seeded team from the 5-AA region.

If the Lady Canes win-lose today, they are seeded second in region and will host the 5-AA third seed October 10, time not yet published. If the Lady Canes win-win today, they will be region champions and host the 5-AA fourth seeded team October 10.

The loss Tuesday to Social Circle was not met with joy from head coach Chris Jenkins as a lot errors contributed to the loss but the team is looking to correct those wrongs today and pursue a state title this season.
