Cougars Fall To Flint River, To Host Crisp

Piedmont Academy’s hopes of beginning the Region 1-AA portion of its schedule with a win fell short last week against Flint River Academy on the road.

The Cougars dropped a 32-8 contest in Woodbury and will try to regroup this Friday at home. Despite the loss coach Mike Parris said he was pleased with his team’s effort.

“We played well,” the coach said. “We are still giving up too many big plays defensively. However, we are just a young team that is making young mistakes. We can correct them. We are staying positive and working to keep getting better.”

Tate Marks connected with J.T. Webb for a touchdown pass in Friday’s contest.

“The effort was fantastic,” Parris said of his team’s performance. “It was the first game we played when it was under 90 degrees and that certainly helped. We did some things very well. We ran the football with some push.”

Piedmont (2-4-1 overall) will host Crisp Academy this week at 7:30 p.m. It is the second meeting this season between the teams. The rematch was necessary after some GISA teams did not field a team this year and another went to eight-man football.

The Crisp Academy Wildcats (3-3 overall) won the first matchup 34-6 in Cordele and Parris fully expects the rematch to be just as physical. The first game was close until late in the game. The Cougars trailed just 12-6 with approximately four minutes remaining.

“At that point the wheels feel off but we learned from that game and it should help us this week,” Parris said.

It is homecoming week at Piedmont and Parris doesn’t expect the activities involved with it to be a distraction.

“I think it is going to be a good week for us,” the coach said. “We are excited about playing Crisp again and seeing how we do in the second game with them.”

Parris said he wants his team to finish the regular season strong and that begin with a solid week of practice leading into the rematch with Crisp Academy.
