Lady Canes Are Third in State

It was a wild ride for the Jasper County Lady Hurricanes as they finished in third place during the softball AA division of the Georgia High School Association.

“It was another great run,” noted Head Coach Chris Jenkins. “A break or an umpire’s call goes our way, or we get one timely hit in our two losses, and we may have been the team holding the trophy at the end of the day. We played that well.

“The girls should be extremely proud of what they’ve accomplished, our school hasn’t seen a two-year run like this since the football teams of the 50’s and 60’s, and I hope they enjoyed the run as much as their coaches, parents, teachers, and fans.”

The varsity squad began the state tournament last Thursday with an afternoon 14-2 victory against Vidalia. Things didn’t go their way for their second game the next day against 8 AA region mate and eventual tournament winner Social Circle. The Lady Redskins took that game 8-5 in their final inning with three runs scored to break the five all tie after the top of the seventh.

Moving to the consolation bracket, the Lady Canes went on to defeat Heard County 10-6 and Jeff Davis 6-1 but fell short of making it to the championship game by falling to another 8AA region mate Banks County, 5-2.

The state AA division finish echoed the 8 AA region finish with one, two and three finishing just so in the state.
