Lady Cougars, Cougars Complete Tournaments As Holiday Runner-ups
Piedmont Academy’s varsity girls basketball team finished as runner-up at the Cougar Classic during the holidays.
Coach Michael Wilson’s team defeated Creekside 36-21 before falling 45-39 to Social Circle High School in the championship game. In the win against Creekside Hailey Hooper paced the team with 16 points. Madison McCart added six points while Lucy Tuggle and Jayden Young both scored five.
Deacon Robinson and Haley Ann Frank both added two points.
McCart led the Lady Cougars with 11 points against SCHS while Frank scored nine and Young finished with seven. Tuggle contributed three points for Piedmont.
The Piedmont boys finished third in the tournament as they defeated Notre Dame Academy 73-61 in the consolation game. In that contest Sam Wright scored 38 points including 16 field goals. Wright was also 6-of-7 from the foul line.
Wright’s monster performance included 11 points in the first quarter, 13 in the second, 10 more in the third and four in the fourth quarter.
Tate Marks and Brock Greenwood both scored seven points while Clay Jones added six. Ryan Holder scored three points.
During the first day of the tournament the Piedmont boys fell to Creekside 75-44. Marks and Wright both scored 14 while Bradley Greenwood and Holder added five each.
The varsity teams also competed in a two-day event hosted by John Milledge Academy Dec. 28-29. The boys finished as runner-up after defeating Trinity Christian School-Dublin 50-38 the opening night and then falling 62-56 to Covenant in the championship game.
In the win against Trinity Christian, Wright had another big performance with 22 points. Brock Greenwood also finished in double digits with 10. Holder added six and Bradley Greenwood and Marks both scored five points.
The following day saw four Piedmont players score in double figures. Jones and Holder both scored 12 points while Marks scored 11 and Wright added 10.
Bradley Greenwood contributed eight points while Brock Greenwood added three.
The Lady Cougars fell to Covenant 33-25 in the consolation game. McCart led the team with eight points while Tuggle scored seven and Hooper and Sydney Stroud both scored three. Young and Frank finished with two points each.
The Piedmont varsity girls fell to Trinity 38-26 despite 16 points by McCart. Tuggle scored four points while Hooper, Frank and Young all added two each.
Piedmont’s varsity teams will return to the court on Saturday against Gatewood at home beginning at 1 p.m. The teams will then host Windsor Academy Monday and Brandon Hall on Tuesday with varsity games beginning at 6 p.m. those nights.
The varsity boys are now 7-5 overall while the Lady Cougars enter the second part of the 2018-2019 season at 5-8 overall.
