Cougars, Lady Cougars Break Streak With Wins
The Piedmont Academy Middle varsity basketball both saw a long losing streak come to an end against an old rival Saturday night.
The Cougars and Lady Cougars recorded wins against visiting Gatewood. For the Lady Cougars, the 41-31 win was the first against the Lady Gators since 2001.
Madison McCart led Piedmont with 12 points while Lucy Tuggle scored nine. Maddie Waddleton added seven key points while Haley Ann Frank scored five. Hailey Hooper and Jayden Young both added four points.
The Lady Cougars led 10-4 after the first quarter and 21-17 at halftime. Piedmont continued to hold a nine-point advantage (33-24) after the third quarter.
Sam Wright (20 points) and Tate Marks (19 points) provided the one-two punch offensively for the varsity boys in their 56-36 win, the first for the program against the Gators since 2012 in the region tournament.
Bradley Greenwood added eight points while Brock Greenwood and Ryan Holder both scored three points and Clay Jones contributed two points.
Piedmont also swept visiting Brandon Hall Tuesday night. The Lady Cougars rolled to a 60-15 win as coach Michael Wilson was able to get all team members game experience.
McCart led the team with 23 points. Young, Hooper and Haiden Crews each scored six points and Mallory Kelly added five. Tuggle scored four points while Frank and Raleigh Lofton scored three.
Also contributing offensively were Mattie Johnston, Madison Johnson and Fleming Sealy with two each. Deacon Robinson added a free throw.
It was also a strong win for the Piedmont boys as they defeated Brandon Hall 72-50. Wright had another big night with 35 points. Jones finished with 12 and Marks added 11 points. Bradley Greenwood also finished in double figures with 10 points.
Piedmont’s varsity basketball teams will compete at John Milledge Academy today, Jan. 10 beginning at 6 p.m. The middle school teams will also play at JMA beginning at 3:45 p.m. The varsity teams also play at Windsor Academy in Macon on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 6 p.m. A junior varsity boys game will be at 4:30 p.m.
