Mat Cougars Prepare for Region
Piedmont Academy’s varsity wrestling team is preparing for the upcoming region tournament where team members will look to qualify for state.
Coach Kaden Miller said his Mat Cougars have been working for Saturday when Piedmont hosts the event. Wrestling action begins at 10 a.m. in the school gym.
“We have been looking pretty good,” Miller said. “We are getting after it with a high level of intensity this week. I feel good about our chances on Saturday.”
Piedmont will compete against Gatewood and John Milledge Academy Saturday. The top four wrestlers from each weight class will advance to state.
“We are looking at having several wrestlers contend for region titles,” Miller said.
Logan Conner, Gray Morgan, Trent Coots, Garrett Kirksey and Eric Tobler are among the wrestlers leading Piedmont into the region meet. Conner was state runner-up last season.
The GISA state wrestling tournament will be Saturday, Feb. 2, in Americus.
George Russell won the state title at the Middle School tournament in Westfield last weekend. Russell competed at 189 pounds.
