America Strickland Chooses Michael Cooper at JCHS

America Strickland was named STAR student for Jasper County High School based on her SAT scores, and she chose Michael Cooper as her STAR teacher.

The STAR Program is designed to recognize high school seniors who have the highest SAT score in their graduating class and meet all the other program requirements. How many classes a student takes off campus or how involved the student is with extra-curricular activities at the school are irrelevant in determining the STAR Student, according to the announcement from the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, statewide sponsor of the program.

Locally, the Monticello Civic Club sponsors the STAR banquet which will be held next Thursday, Feb. 7, at Monticello First United Methodist Church at noon.

America Strickland is a Senior at Jasper County High School. She has lived in Jasper County for five years. She enjoys exploring her creative side through writing, singing, and playing music. She is member of JCHS Marching Band and symphonic band. She has participated in the JCHS Spring Musical and sings in the chorus.

America has had a lot of teachers at Jasper County who have been ready and willing to help her pursue her goals. She picked Mr. Cooper as her STAR Teacher. Mr. Cooper teaches AP American Literature. Mr. Cooper is honest in his approach to teaching and has really helped America develop as a writer.

Mr. Cooper said, “I have been teaching at JCHS for 18 years. I teach English and drama. I have been the One Act and Literary coach for about 12 years and I came to first know America through her involvement in Literary. She is also a senior in my AP Literature and Composition class this year.

“She is an outstanding student and one of the finest writers I have encountered in my teaching career. I am more than honored to have been chosen by America as her STAR Teacher.”
