Mat Cougars Win Region Titles, Set for State

Piedmont Academy’s varsity wrestling team had four region champions and one runner-up at last Saturday’s tournament hosted by the Mat Cougars.

Trent Coots (132), Logan Conner (195), Jakobe Tremblay (220) and Gray Moran (285) each won first in their respective weight class while Eric Tobler (170) was runner up. Each will advance to this weekend’s state tournament.

“Our wrestlers excelled at region like we expected,” said coach Kaden Miller. “We are now looking toward state and hope to perform well on the state’s big stage.”

Piedmont’s coach believes his state qualifiers will each have legitimate chances to excel this weekend.

“Logan has a chance to win it all,” Miller said. “He was runner-up last season and things look good for him to make it back to the championship match.”

Tremblay has been one of the most improved wrestlers in his first year of competition.

“Jakobe also had a chance to do very well,” his coach said. “This will be good experience for him at this level.”

Coots has moved down a weight class and that change seems to have benefited him.

“Trent has a chance to win it all at 132,” Miller said. “I also think Gray is one of the top three wrestlers in his weight class and he has a chance to compete with the other wrestlers at the state of the 285 division.:

Tobler has settled in at the 170-pound division and Miller said he was eager to see how he goes at state.

The GISA state wrestling tournament will be Friday and Saturday in Americus in the Storm Dome at Georgia Southwestern University. Weigh-ins begin at 1 p.m. Friday following by state action.
