Diamond Cougars Win Home Baseball Opener
A team effort on the pitcher’s mound helped the Piedmont Academy baseball team defeat visiting Bethlehem Christian Academy 6-2 on Monday.
In the home opener for the Cougars, Matthew Griffin earned the win while Chase Porter recorded the save. Sam Wright, Tate Marks and Cameron Mobley also saw pitching time. Porter and Mobley both had three strikeouts.
Marks helped pace the offense with a home run and two RBI. Owen Brady and Porter both drew two walks.
Coach Colt Spivey was pleased with the overall effort in the victory.
“I thought we played well,” the coach said. “We have our entire team together now. We made some good adjustments at the plate. It really went better than I expected at this stage of the season.”
Rob Allgood helped lead the defensive effort. Overall the team had just one defensive miscue.
“Some of our players had to knock the rust off so it was good to be able to get the win,” Spivey said.
The game was tied 2-2 after the top of the fifth inning when Piedmont put four runs on the board.
Last Thursday’s scheduled home game against Bulloch was rained out and will be rescheduled for a later date this season.
The Diamond Cougars will travel to Gatewood today, Feb. 28 for a 4 p.m. game. The teams will then meet in a rematch Saturday at Piedmont. Middle School action begins at 11 a.m. Saturday followed by the varsity contest at 1 p.m.
