Piedmont Tennis Continues to Improve
Piedmont Academy’s varsity tennis teams have seen plenty of time on the court in recent days.
On March 5 the teams competed against Thomas Jefferson in matches played in Milledgeville.
“It was not ideal tennis weather,” said Piedmont coach Alison Hildebrant.
“The conditions were cold and windy. Anyone that wasn’t playing was wrapped up in a blanket.”
Thomas Jefferson did not have a boys squad so Piedmont took the win.
“Our girls put up a good fight with most matches going to deuce but we were not able to get the winning point,” Hildebrant said. “During the first round two of the girls were able to pull off wins.”
MaLynne Webb, a first year player, and has continued to make quick progress, her coach said. Webb won her singles match 8-1.
Fleming Sealy is a first year player as well and has also been quick to pick up the game.
“MaLynne and Fleming are willing to play wherever they are needed,” Hildebrant said.
Piedmont’s number one doubles team, Gracie Hunt and Ryn Smith, lost to Thomas Jefferson but for the second round both were able to pull off the win in singles. Hunt played number one singles, winning 8 -6 while Smith played number two singles taking an 8–6 victory.
Piedmont also played Edmund Burke Academy in a doubleheader last week with Brentwood Academy the host location.
Jayden Young fell 8-4 in number one singles for the Lady Cougars. Rebekah Hicks lost 8-2 at number two singles while Kelsey Leach fell 8-1 in number three singles play.
Hunt and Smith won 8 -0 in number doubles while Sealy and Webb won 8-2 in number two doybles.
Both Piedmont’s boys singles players competed as Cody Brimberry was number one singles with Brock Greenwood at number two singles.
For the second round Edmund Burke won all girls singles matches.
Jayden put up and outstanding fight,” her coach said. “This is her first year playing. The match was tied 7–7 and Edmund Burke’s player came back with the win of 9-7.
Piedmont’s number one doubles team was neck and neck with the score 8–8 going into a tie breaker with the Lady Cougars taking the victory.
Piedmont will return to the court Monday, March 18 against Monsignor in Athens.
