Diamond Cougars Earn More Wins
The Piedmont Academy baseball team earned a 6-3 victory against John Milledge Academy in a home game last week.
Coach Colt Spivey’s team jumped out to a 5-0 lead before closing the deal with another run in the bottom of the fifth. The visiting Trojans scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning and one more in the seventh.
Tate Marks, Chase Porter and Sam Wright each pitched for the Cougars. Porter and Wright both had three strikeouts.
Marks also helped lead the offensive with two hits. Overall Piedmont had seven hits in the contest against its Class AAA opponent.
Piedmont also defeated Henry County High School Tuesday 11-1 at home in six innings. Marks and Matthew Griffin combined for the pitching duties and only needed 73 total pitches in the contest. Both recorded four strikeouts.
“Defensively we played well,” Spivey said of Tuesday’s game. “We only had one throwing miscue and it was on a very tough play. We were as strong defensively as we have been all year.”
While the Cougars scored 11 runs in the win their coach said there is still a good bit of work to be done at the plate.
“We are not where we need to be offensively,” Spivey said. “We are having too many pop-ups and throw-away at-bats. We have to get that fixed before region play.”
In Tuesday’s game Caleb Faircloth, Griffin and Wright each had two hits. Zach Spivey drew three walks. Porter, Wright and Clay Jones each drove in two runs.
After one run in the bottom of the first and two more in the second, the Cougars pushed four runs across in both the fourth and sixth innings.
The varsity Cougars will return to the field today, March 14 when they travel to Flint River for a 5 p.m. contest.
