Anna Grace Hiers Tucker

Anna Grace Hiers Tucker, age 91, of Monticello, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2019, at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle.

Born in Lake Park, Ga. at her house on May 3, 1927, she was one of seven children born to the late Rev. Charles Archard Hiers, Sr. and Lena Corbett Hiers.

She was preceded in death by sisters and brother, Lois McCrainie, Elizabeth Carter Whidden, Lena Maude Harrell, Kathleen Copeland, Charles Archard Hiers, Jr., and Caroline Locklear.

Grace attended Valdosta High School and Georgia State Women’s College, today known as Valdosta State College, finishing with a BA in Art. Earning elementary teacher certification, she taught second grade in Adel.

Moving to Atlanta, she lived with her sister, Caroline, and worked at Patterson’s Funeral Home as a receptionist. While on a double date skiing on Lake Altoona, she met and later married Hugh Coleman Tucker, Jr. of Monticello. On September 7, 1952, they married at Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church in Atlanta. He was the son of Hugh Coleman Tucker, Sr. and Carrie Roberta Ezell Tucker.

Residing in Monticello, Grace became a housewife, mother, secretary at H. C. Tucker Motor Company, and taught second grade at Monroe Academy in Forsyth.

She is survived by her children, Elizabeth Tucker Simmons (Keith) of Suwanee, Hugh Coleman “Buddy” Tucker, III (Wanda) of Monticello, Thomas Ridley Tucker (Julie) of Monticello, and Mary Grace Simcic (Vilim) of Knoxville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Rachel Simmons Blide, Lauren Elizabeth Simmons, Amy Victoria Simmons, Hugh Coleman “Cole” Tucker, IV , Corbett Lamar Tucker, Carrie Tucker Phillips, Karolina Grace Simcic, and Gabriella Maria Simcic; great grandchildren, Hampton Lee Tucker and Luke Bennett Tucker; step-grandchildren, Tabitha Gail Spurling and Tamara Grace Jernigan; and step-great-grandchildren, Hunter Levi Spurling, Alexis Taylor Spurling, and William Daniel Jernigan.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 30, 2019, at the Monticello First United Methodist Church. Interment will be held at 2:30 p.m.., at Providence Baptist Church in Shady Dale. Keith Simmons will officiate.

The family will receive friends from noon until 1 p.m., Saturday, March 30, 2019, at the Monticello First United Methodist Church.
