Cane Tennis Competes at Region, State
Strong performances at the region tournament helped the Monticello High School tennis teams advance to state competition.
The boys and girls both competed in the Region 8-AA region tennis tournament last week. The tournament ended with both teams as the number four seed which secured a trip to the state competition.
Coach Patty Cole said the Lady Canes began the season with two veteran players in the line-up with the remainder of the team being rookies with little to no experience in tennis.
“The coaches have been amazed at the progress the girls have made this season and are excited to see what the future years will entail for this young team,” Cole said.
The boys team started strong with veteran players in all but two spots in their line-up.
“They played well at region with many of the matches going into a third set as the boys fought for every point,” Cole said. “We are extremely proud of how well the boys have played this season.”
Number one singles player sophomore Jaben Hardin was undefeated after last week.
The teams competed in the opening round of the state tournament Tuesday in Bremen. Cole said it was nice for her players to be able to compete at state at the same location on the same day.
Bremen won both the boys and girls events concluding the season for the Canes and Lady Canes.
“Our kids played great,” Cole said. “We had a great season. The kids were pleased with how they played and they had fun. That is really the main thing.”
Harbin’s state match went into a tiebreaker before falling for the first time this season. Cole said she is glad to have Harbin with the program for two additional years.
