Lady Cougars Face Tough Soccer Foes
As has been the case for most of the 2019 season the Piedmont Academy girls soccer team faced tough opposition in recent matches.
The Lady Cougars fell 3-1 to John Milledge Academy on the road Tuesday. Piedmont trailed 2-0 at halftime and would fall behind 3-0 in the second half before Sydney Davis connected on a goal.
Coach Michael Wilson said Morgan Whitley played well in goal.
“It’s a similar story for us,” the coach said. “We seem to start a little shaky defensively. We made corrections but we are not able to rally after falling behind early.”
Sydney Stroud, Emily Mills, Hannah Tyler, Mattie Johnston and Davis each played well Tuesday, Wilson said.
“I think if we could get a lead early in a match then good things will happen,” he said. “We have played so many strong opponents this season.”
Callie Cook and Neely Bradford helped lead the defensive effort Tuesday.
The Lady Cougars also fell to Monsignor Donovan 3-0 last week.
“We played aggressively on defense but need to continue to attack more on offense,” Wilson said. “Monsignor Donovan had a great goalkeeper who is hard to get by. They are probably the best Class A team in the state.”
Piedmont has seen a similar pattern in recent outings.
“We give up a goal early, struggle offensively and then control the last 20 minutes of the match,” Wilson said.
The Lady Cougars will host Augusta Prep Tuesday, April 23 at 5:30 p.m.
