Cougar Football Working for Success this Fall

Will Johnson is all about enthusiasm.

The first-year Piedmont Academy football coach has been working non-stop to rebuild the Cougar tradition. That task is nothing new for the young coach as he has been undertaking a similar process with the school’s varsity boys basketball team the past couple of years.

“Building in basketball is tougher because there has not been a winning tradition,” Johnson said recently. “Piedmont has always been known for football. We just want to get back to the past level of success the program has enjoyed.”

Piedmont will open the 2019 season against John Hancock Academy on the road. The following week will see the Cougars travel to Monsignor Donovan.

The home opener will be September 6 against Thomas Jefferson.

Johnson’s team will compete with Gatewood and Flint River for the region title this fall. Players are already taking part in summer conditioning and weight training.

Homecoming will be the October 18 game against Flint River. The November 1 contest against Robert Toombs has been slated for senior night.

Piedmont will host its first Cougars Pro Day Football Camp on July 13. The camp will feature several former college and professional players.

Johnson played collegiately at Valdosta State and has numerous contacts in football circles. The camp will be divided into a morning and afternoon sessions. Players who are ages 8-12 years will work in the morning while players ages 13-18 will be in the afternoon.

The morning session will be from 9-11:45 p.m. with the afternoon session from 12:30-3 p.m.

Cost is $50 per player. Those who register by July 7 can do so for $40. The camp is open to all players in the area, regardless of school. Proceeds will benefit the Piedmont Academy football program.
