Hurricanes Fall to Mt. de Sales
The Monticello Hurricanes lost their season opener 35-6, a non-conference game, to the Mt. de Sales Cavaliers. The game’s opening kick brought the rain and a 30 minute delay of game due to lightning.
Seniors for the varsity squad include Tellis Banks, Matt Cain, Michael Clendenin, Canius Dennis, Kendarius Hicks, Kristian Kelley, Ben Lynch, Jaylon Mitchell, Jordan Mitchell, Jaylen Peete, Hyrum Pierce, Johari Stone, Tyler Wages, Akiren Walker, and Chantz Watts.
Mt. de Sales made it into the end zone first, scoring 14 points in the first quarter and 21 in the third. Monticello’s score came in the third, “under the offensive line leadership of Keyshawn Ammons,” said Coach Rydell Jackson. “After a drive of four plays Mario Green took it to the end zone with a three yard rush. “
“Our offense did pretty good,” said Coach Jackson, starting his second year as head coach for the Monticello Hurricanes.
The Canes had a total of 206 offensive yards, 166 of those rushing and 40 passing yards. Quarterback Cain had five completions on 11 passing attempts for 44 yards. Greene had 11 carries for 35 yards with one of carry resulting in the Canes only touchdown. Ammons had four carries for 69 yards, senior J. Mitchell had three carries for 52 yards.
Kicking for the team was Mac Barton who had two kick offs for 75 yards and four punts for 135 yards .
Kick off returns for the Canes came from Greene with 115 yards on four returns with his longest return 44 yards.
Graeme Williams had one kick off return for 35 yards.
“Defensively the kids played hard,” said the coach. “We need to get better at tackling.”
The Canes defense had three pass deflections, a caused fumble by Ammons and an interception by junior Williams.
The team had 71 total tackles. Jackson Taylor led with nine total tackles, five solo and four assists and Cedrion Stone had eight tackles, with six solo and two assists. Chantz Watts added eight tackles with five solo and three assists, Akiren Walker had seven tackles, with five solo and two assists and Jaylon Mitchell had seven tackles, all solo.
This year’s coaching staff consists of Jackson and assistant coaches Matt Martin, Keldrick Davis, Matt Garvin, Justin Le Suer, Alan Shurling and Kenny Moore.
