MHS Lady Hurricanes Defeat Lady Patriots

On Tuesday, Aug. 27, the Lady Canes won 12-5, beating Oglethorpe.

Bailey Jenkins was on the mound for the win going seven innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and striking out two. `

The Lady Canes scored all of their 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning, with the line up making its way around twice. Jasmine Stone started it all with a lead off single. Avery Barton was next up, sending a line drive double to center field. Kate Robinson hit a single and Allie Jones doubled. An error on Hailey Tripp’s ground ball made the score 4-0.

A walk by Marley Sands, Jenna Parrish hit by a pitch, Treuana Jacobs has a fielder’s choice and the line up started over with another single by Stone, making the score 7-0. Barton, Robinson and Jones followed with their second hits of the inning, and another ground ball error for Tripp took the score to 12-0 before a third out finally ended the inning.

Oglethorpe tried to rally, picking up five runs in the game, but they were unable to catch the Lady Canes who had 12 hits, 12 runs and one error to Oglethorpe’s five runs, eight hits and two errors.

Stone and Barton shared three hits each, Robinson and Jones each had two, and Jenkins and Tripp one hit a piece. Robinson had four runs batted in (RBI) in the high scoring inning, Stone and Jones had two RBI each and Jenkins, Tripp and Jacobs contributed one RBI a piece.

“It’s been a roller coaster so far, in just about every aspect of the game,” Head Coach Chris Jenkins said. “It’s frustrating to play near flawless defense one day, then make six to eight errors the next, especially when the talent and ability are there.

“If we can start to play with some consistency, we’ll be fine when it’s all said and done. We like what we’ve seen attitude-wise, though. When you see no sign of quit, especially when things aren’t going the way they want, it’s usually just a matter of time before they’ll break through.”

On Monday, the Lady Canes came out swinging again with 12 hits, but it wasn’t enough as they lost 10-4 to Georgia Military College (GMC) who scored their 10 runs on 14 hits scattered throughout the game.

The Lady Bulldogs were on the board first, putting up two runs in the top of the first. The Lady Canes saw Jenkins start on the mound. Their first run came in the bottom of the first after Barton, who reached on a fielder’s choice, scored on a single by Jenkins.

The end of the first inning had GMC up 2-1. Seven hard hit singles led to a big six run inning for GMC in the top of the third, proving too much lead for the Lady Canes to catch.

Barton got on base again in the fifth with a double to left field. She scored after a line drive single to center field by Robinson. They threatened more runs after Jones reached on a fielder’s choice and Jenkins had a fly ball single to right field. Two outs later Jones and Jenkins were left on base.

The sixth gave one more run to GMC and two to the Lady Canes. Hailey Hooberry reached first on a ground ball error and advanced to second after a bunt single by freshman Jacobs. A fielder’s choice by Stone sent Hoobeery to third while Jacobs was thrown out at second. Barton slammed a line drive triple to left field to score Hooberry and Stone. Barton was left stranded to end the inning.

In a pitching duel last Thursday between the Lady Canes and Union County, the long road trip resulted in a 2-0 loss for the Lady Canes.

Catcher Stone started the game strong for Monticello with a lead off line drive double to left field. Three outs later, Stone was left stranded on base. Union County went three up, three down.

The Lady Canes bats were mostly silent with the exception of two hits by Stone who doubled in the first and singled in the top of the third.

Strong pitching from both teams kept the game scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when Union County scored two runs on three singles and a double on two outs.

Going three up, three down in the top of the seventh, the Lady Canes lost the pitching duel 2-0. Jenkins, the losing pitcher, went six innings, recording 18 outs with one walk, two strike-outs and allowing eight hits and two runs. The Lady Canes had one error and Union County zero.

At home last Wednesday, the Lady Canes lost in a battle of the bats to Mary Persons 19-9, with 15 hits for the Lady Canes and 19 for Mary Persons. The Lady Canes never recovered from a first inning that saw eight runs for Mary Persons and two for them.

The bottom of the third saw the Lady Canes put one run on board after a two out double by Jones. Jones then advanced to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.

The top of the fourth inning gave Mary Persons two additional runs. The Lady Canes rallied with three runs on two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Tripp reached first on an error and advanced to second after Parrish singled. Tripp scored and Parrish advanced to second after Barton singled to left field and a single by Robinson drove in both Parrish and Stone.

In the fifth inning the runs continued, Mary Persons adding two and the Lady Canes three. The Lady Canes proved they don’t give up, scoring their three runs on two outs for the second inning in a row. A double by Tripp and Parrish, and singles by Jacobs and Stone made up the fifth inning runs.

Losing pitcher was Barton, allowing seven hits and 12 runs over five innings and striking out five. Jenkins and Hooberry threw one inning a piece. Multiple hits by Stone, Barton, Robinson and Parrish with Parrish going four for four at the plate. Jones, Sands and Tripp each contributed with one hit a piece. Stone and Barton had two stolen bases and Stone led RBIs with three, followed by Robinson with two and Sands and Parrish with one each.
