Lady Cougars Return to Action
The Piedmont Academy varsity fast-pitch softball team returns to action Thursday after a nine-day layoff from competition.
The Lady Cougars have not played since early last week but will travel to LaGrange Academy Thursday to begin region play at 4:30 p.m. Piedmont is currently 4-2 and first-year coach Joe Johnson said he likes how the team is progressing.
“I am really pleased with where we are at,” Johnson said. “We are getting a little better each week.”
The Lady Cougars have earned wins against Georgia Force, Brentwood, Bethlehem Christian and John Milledge. The two losses have been against Windsor Academy.
The team will have to make some adjustments during the next couple of weeks as standout Haley Ann Frank is out of action after appendix surgery. Frank has been one of the leading offensive and defensive players for Piedmont this season.
The start of the new school year arrived Tuesday for players and Johnson said it will actually be a positive to be on a normal schedule.
“We will have a set practice time now,” the coach said. “The vacations and weekend trips will be over.”
As region play begins the Lady Cougars are the likely favorite but Johnson said his team will not take any opponent lightly.
Madison Johnson has also had a standout season with multiple homers in 2019.
Following today’s game at LaGrange Piedmont will host Flint River Monday at 5 p.m. and host Central Fellowship Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
