Relative Newcomer Wins Contest

Randy Patterson beat out all other football contest players last week by correctly guessing the winners of 13 games listed, and it just happened to be the first 13 listed, meaning until Sunday he was going for a perfect score.
But alas, the Cleveland Browns and N.Y. Jets let him down.
He was the only player to get as many as 13 right. Mr. Patterson said he’s been playing the contest about two years, and the only other time he came close was last year when he completed his entry form, but forgot to submit it.
For his efforts he picked up a $25 prize from Tricia P. Armistead, C.P.A., sponsor of the week. Tiffany Key made the presentation.
Six others also correctly guessed the winner in 12 or more games listed, making them eligible for the honor roll for the grand prize—four tickets to the Chick-Fil-A/Peach Bowl in Atlanta.
For those who are new to the contest, there are 15 games listed on page 11 of today’s paper—a combination of high school, college and pro. Just pick the winners of each game listed and write it on the entry form or a plain piece of paper, and submit it to The News office. The player with the most correct picks wins.

Last week, Georgia rolled over Murray State and Georgia Tech held off a solid USF team. Georgia’s previous Defensive Coordinator Mel Tucker took the head coaching position at Colorado this year. He is off to a good start in Boulder as they won in overtime against 25th ranked Nebraska. An omission from last week’s contest was Texas A&M at Clemson. Clemson looked dominant, beating the Aggies by two touchdowns despite a rare interception thrown by Trevor Lawrence.
Georgia and Georgia Tech are favored heavily in their games against Arkansas State and The Citadel this week. Georgia Southern is back on the contest for the second time. In their previous appearance on the contest Tennessee is 0-2 with losses to Georgia State and BYU.
Tennessee is off to an 0-2 start. They look to get into the win column Saturday as they face off against Southern Conference doormat Chattanooga.
This week, contest players can go with the heavily favored, or gamble that on any Saturday (or Friday or Sunday), upsets happen. Whichever they choose, entries must be to The News office no later than 5 p.m. tomorrow, Sept. 13.
They can be brought to 247 West Washington Street, faxed to 706-468-6576, or e-mailed to info@themonticellonews.com. The person who gets the most right, subject to the tie-breaker, will win a $25 prize from Monticello Auto Parts/Perimeter Mini-Storage, and get their name on the honor roll. There’s not much time, so get busy!
