Lady Canes Finish Fourth in Region, Advance to State
Last week, the Lady Canes lost two contests in their Region 8-AA quest but finished the tournament in fourth place as qualifiers for the state tournament.
Traveling to Banks County, the Lady Canes had game times at noon and 4 p.m., playing against Banks and Rabun respectively.
Though both teams had eight hits a piece, the Lady Canes were unable to get enough runs across the plate against Rabun. Pitcher Kate Robinson took the 2-9 loss going six innings while allowing nine runs with eight hits and striking out three.
The top of the third inning gave the Lady Canes their only runs of the game, scoring two after a lead off single to right field by Mckayla Wages started the inning.Hailey Hooberry followed with a ground ball single to third to advance Wages to second base. A double by Robinson sent the runners home.
Jenkins and Tripp made it to base with singles in the top of the fourth inning, but were unable to score.
Rabun County, scoring one run in the first, five runs in the fourth and three runs in the sixth, took the game.
Robinson went two for four at the plate with Jasmine Stone, Avery Barton, Jenkins, Tripp, Wages and Hooberry each adding one hit to give the Lady Canes eight hits for the game.
Playing their first game at noon against Banks, the Lady Canes fell to Banks 3-0. With only one hit for the game, a single by Tripp in the fifth, the Lady Canes were left scoreless.
Banks, 9-0-0 for the year in conference games, with six hits for the game, sent two runners across the plate in the fifth inning and one in the bottom of the sixth to give them the win.
Jenkins took the loss for the Lady Canes, pitching six innings, allowing three runs on six hits, walking zero and striking out four. Tripp recorded the lone hit for the Lady Canes.
The Lady Canes, with a 2-5-0 Region 8-AA record, are on to state. They won their first game of the state tournament, scheduled for October 8, by forfeit.
The next game for the Lady Canes was to be determined Wednesday, Oct. 9.
