Cane Varsity Squads Defeat Patriots
The varsity basketball Hurricane squads hosted the Oglethorpe County Patriots Tuesday for a region contest that produced wins for the squads.
The Lady Canes, under new head coach Kurt Green, are still getting on their feet this season and earned a win against the Lady Patriots.
Prior to Tuesday’s win, the Lady Canes fell to Rabun County on the road by a 49-point margin. The Lady Canes, 2-4 in the 8AA region, faced the undefeated Lady Tigers last Saturday. Currently in the region, Putnam and Union counties are tied in second place with a 4-1 record. Elbert and Banks counties are tied in third place with a 3-3 record with the Lady Canes and Social Circle following and Oglethorpe trailing.
The Lady Canes fell 54-36 to Putnam last Friday at home during Alumni Night festivities.
The varsity Canes earned a big 75-54 over the Patriots Tuesday while having two tough region losses over the weekend.
The Canes fell 58-53 in overtime Saturday on the road against Rabun who are tied with the Canes in the region at 2-4. Social Circle and Banks counties lead in the region as both are undefeated with Elbert at 3-3 and Union and Putnam tied at 2-3.
In Friday’s 62-54 loss to Putnam, the Canes up by eight at the half and by six at the end of the third quarter had a bit of a let down in the fourth. The War Eagles outscored the hometeam 24 to 10 in the final quarter to pull ahead and take the game.
The varsity squads will host Elbert County on Friday, Jan. 10 at Jasper County Middle School and will travel to Social Circle on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Both days will begin with the junior varsity boys in action at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity girls at 6 p.m. and the varsity boys at 7:30 p.m.
