Lady Cougars Count Down to New Season

Piedmont Academy softball coach Joe Johnson said his players are taking things “day by day” as the 2020 season approaches.

The Lady Cougars are scheduled to open the new campaign Aug.11 against Loganville Christian Academy. A preseason tournament in late July at Windsor Academy has been cancelled.

“We haven’t missed a beat in our practices and preparation,” Johnson said.

Piedmont began working in June for the new softball season. The number of practices per week has increased since July. Currently the players are working four times per week in groups of 10.

“We are rolling along and coaching them like the season will start on time,” Johnson said. “It’s just a situation where we are focusing on working and preparing. We don’t spend time at practice talking about this scenario or that scenario.”

The Lady Cougars will have 19 players on the roster for 2020. Piedmont will also host an Aug. 15 doubleheader against Georgia FCA.

Other opponents on the schedule for the upcoming season include Robert Toombs, Fullington, Gatewood, LaGrange Academy, Gatewood and Eastside High School.

The Lady Cougars return the bulk of their roster for 2020 as they hope to make another deep run in the postseason.
