Georgie Lucille ‘Lucy’ Harvey

Georgie Lucille “Lucy” Harvey, age 84, passed away Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020, at her residence.

“Lucy” Harvey was born in Saluda, S.C. to the late Davis Washington Matthews and Maude Lee Ruth Adams Matthews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Parks Harvey, Jr.; son, William Matthew Harvey; and brother, Alfred Matthews.

Lucy Harvey met John while teaching at Southwest DeKalb High School and they married in 1958. They moved to Monticello in 1970 and taught school for the Jasper County School System. She worked as a journalist for The Monticello News for a number of years and retired as secretary for the Jasper County Extension office.

Lucy was an active member of the Monticello Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder and youth group leader. She was a member of the choir and Women of the Church.

Lucy enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening and writing. She enjoyed writing poems and published a book of poems for her family members. She was a member of the Pink Ladies and Jasper County Care Corps.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude and love to their brother, Davy, who selflessly took loving care of his mother for the last five years of her life.

She is survived by her children, John Davis Harvey of Monticello, Pastor James (Julie) Harvey of Demorest, LeAnn (Michael) Clark of Eatonton and Adam (Sarah) Harvey of Plattsmouth, Neb.; grandchildren, Seth

(Kali) Harvey, Nathan (Emily) Harvey, Jessi Clark, Sydney (Michael) Jensen, Elizabeth Harvey, Matthew Harvey and Abigail Harvey; and great- grandchildren, Skylar Grace Fleck, Graham Harvey and Amelia Harvey.

A visitation at 1 p.m. will precede funeral services, which will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2020, at the Monticello Presbyterian Church. Interment will be held in West View Cemetery. Rev. Jon Van Deventer, Pastor James Harvey and Rev. Seth Harvey will officiate.

Serving as pallbearers will be Seth Harvey, Nathan Harvey, James Harvey, Adam Harvey, Michael Jensen and David Aldridge.
