Lady Hurricanes Softball Extend Win Streak While Preparing for State Playoffs
The varsity softball Lady Hurricanes are preparing for Georgia High School Association (GHSA) state playoff action in Region 3AA that will begin next week with the first round on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
With a 8-8 overall record and 1-3 region record the Lady Canes will play in the state tournament as one of the four top seeds headed to the playoffs. The squad has one region contest remaining which is to be played today, Oct. 8 against Dodge County, the team that currently ranks second in Region 3AA at 3-1 and 10-4 overall.
Bleckley County leads the region at 5-1, followed by Dodge, then Lamar at 2-2, as Jasper rounds out the top four. The final standings and location of the first round of playoffs will not be determined until all regular season region games are completed by the end of this week.
The varsity ladies defeated non-region competitor First Presbyterian Day (FPD) 9-7 and region competitor Washington County (WACO) 5-1 last week before falling to former region competitor Social Circle 2-1 on Tuesday.
“Not our best stretch of games, even though we won 2 of 3,” said Head Coach Chris Jenkins.
“Azure Guli and Lindsey Thomas both had good games offensively against FPD and WACO, but as a whole we haven’t been making as much solid contact as we would like and that came back to bite us against Social Circle.”
The coach continued, “the Dodge game Thursday (today, Oct. 8) will determine our seeding for the state playoffs, so hopefully we get back to swinging it as well as we did for the majority of September.”
The ladies will face off against new region mate Dodge County today prior to first round state playoff action next week.
