Nearly 50 Percent Have Already Voted
Nearly 50 percent of Jasper County’s registered voters have already cast their vote with today and tomorrow left for early voting then the 12 hours on Tuesday.
According to Chief Registrar Carole Norris, 3,415 people had voted in person as of Wednesday morning, and she had 1,860 absentee ballots to be counted. That’s a total of 5,275 with Jasper County’s registered voter count standing at 10,611.
Voters will determine who the next president of the United States will be, along with a lot of other races. In addition, Jasper County voters, like those across the state, need to vote on two constitutional amendments and one referendum.
All purely local races have already been decided except for a special election set for March to fill the District 1 County Commission seat left vacant by the death of Carl Pennamon. However, there are several regional races with local intent. State Rep. Susan Holmes has an independent challenger, Joe Reed, and a Democratic challenger, Sharonda Bell, and Sen. Burt Jones also has a Democratic challenger, Veronica Brinson. If there is a runoff in either of those races, or other state races, the run-of wil be Tuesday, Dec. 1.
In addition, there is a 17-person race for U.S. Senate to fill the seat vacated by Johnny Isakson. The run-off for that will be Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021. And, Jasperites will help choose another U.S. Senator and a Representative.
