Lady Canes’ Quest for State Title Ends
The Monticello High School Lady Hurricane varsity softball squad‘s sprint to a Georgia High School Association FastPitch state title ended at Berrien High School in Nashville, Ga. last Thursday with a double game elimination by a score of 9-6, 15- 4.
Head Coach Chris Jenkins said that his team “just picked a bad time to have our worst day.” The team’s defense had been strong all season which made the two losses even more disappointing especially considering that the Lady Canes hit the ball well enough to win both games, he said.
“We’re still proud of the season they had, especially after struggling early on. To finish second in a tough region and advance in the state tournament, shows the resilience of the girls and the leadership that our seniors Azure Guli, Bailey Jenkins, Allie Jones, and Hailie Tripp provided.”
Continuing to speak to the experience of his seniors, “Those four have seen some great times in their four years, playing for a State Championship as freshmen, coming up one win short of playing for another as sophomores, and Sweet 16 appearances their junior and senior years. It’s disappointing to see it end, but they’ll have some great memories of their time as a Lady Cane.
Berrien advances to face Heard County in the Elite 8 round along with Cook, Bremen, Vidalia, Jeff Davis, Lovett, and 3AA Region top seed Banks County. The new state champion will be crowned this weekend after action on Friday and Saturday.
