Jasperites Elect Trump, Other Republicans

Jasper County voters turned out in force…toppling previous voter turnout records, as more than 73 percent of Jasper County’s registered voters took the time to cast their votes in this election.

President Donald Trump won overwhelmingly in Jasper County, although results statewide and nationally were not yet complete.

Republican President Trump garnered 5,809 votes here to Democrat Joseph R. Biden’s 1,759, and Libertarian Jo Jorgensen received 61 votes.

In the race of U.S. Senate, locally Republican David Perdue received 5,738 votes, and Democrat Jon Ossoff received 1,689. Libertarian Shane Hazel received 151 votes.

In the senate race to replace Johnny Isakson, which featured 17 candidates, Kelly Loeffler and Raphael Warnock were poised for a runoff, to be held January 5, after Tuesday’s voting. Locally, Republican Mrs. Loeffler received 3,242 votes; Republican Doug Collins received 2,136 votes, and Democrat Raphael Warnock received 1,215 votes.

Closer to home, Republican State Rep. Susan Holmes received 5,845 votes here, compared to Democrat Sharonda Bell, 1,389, and Independent Joe Reed, 279. Rep. Holmes was re-elected with 69.59 percent of the vote district-wide, compared to the Democrat’s 26.27 percent, and Joe Reed’s 4.14 percent.

Likewise, Republican State Senator Burt Jones received 5,849 votes locally, while Democratic challenger Veronica Brinson received 1,624 votes. He won re-election with 67.96 percent of the vote in the district, compared to Ms. Brinson receiving 32.04 percent of the vote.

All the totally local contests were decided in the primary, with the exception of the seat of District 1 County Commissioner. Carl Pennamon died in September, but his name was still on the ballot. He received 707 votes. A special election to fill his seat is set for March, 2021.

Locally Republican Jody Hice received 5,803 votes, and his Democratic challenger, Tabitha Johnson-Green received 1,644.

Jasper County supported the incumbents for Public Service Commission with Jason Shaw and Lauren Bubba McDonald, both Republicans, maintaining their seats based on local voting.

Votes received in the uncontested races include 6,648 for Leann Roper Airington for Clerk of Superior Court; 6,854 for Sheriff Donnie Pope; 6,823 for Tax Commissioner Angela Walsh; 5,601 for Surveyor Robert O. Jordan, and 6,742 for Coroner Billy Norris.

Voters in Jasper County overwhelming supported Constitutional Amendment #1, with 5,772 voters voting yes, and 1,385 voting no. On Amendment #2, 5,054 voters here said yes, and 2,051 voted no. Also on the Statewide Referendum, Jasper voters voted 4,812 to 2,345.
