Mat Canes Compete in Tough Meet

The Perry High School Invitational turned out to be somewhat of a lesson in hard knocks for the Jasper County-Monticello High School varsity wrestling team.

The Mat Canes went 1-4 overall but faced some of the best competition it will see all season.

Opponents including Class 6A Brunswick, Class 5A programs Jones County St. Pius along with Class 4A Perry High School.

“We definitely saw some good competition, coach Andy Rewis said. “Our youth and inexperience got taken advantage of. We are getting better but it was a tough weekend.”

Jasper County-Monticello was able to earn a 48-30 win against Rutland High School of Macon.

Gabe Evans (113) did not lose a match in the tournament for the Mat Canes. Freshman Ethan Shapiro (170) also recorded some wins,

Trent Durham (106) and Anderson Reid (154) also had success during the tournament.

“I told our wrestlers it was going to be tough,” Rewis said. “We have been overachieving some this year with us being so young.”
