Mat Canes Set for Individual Meet
The Jasper County-Monticello High School wrestling team will venture to the region tournament today, Feb. 4 and look to advance as many athletes possible to state.
The second region meet of the 2020-2021 is the individual wrestler bracket setup. Wrestlers advance as individuals if they finish in the top three of their respective weight class.
“We will have 12 wrestlers competing and we hope to take all 12 to state,” coach Andy Rewis said. “We have several who have a chance to win region and others who can get to the finals.”
The Mat Canes hosted Alcovy High School last week and earned a 60-12 win. Alcovy managed just two wins in the match. Upson-Lee was scheduled to compete but was unable to attend.
“Our wrestlers have been working hard,” Rewis said. “We have been stressing that this could be it for the season. For our seniors, if they don’t advance then their high school career is over. We need to be focused and not hold anything back.”
Today’s region tournament will be hosted by Lamar County High School. Weigh-ins begin at 3 p.m. Five schools are set to compete.
